Titanic (1997) and Escaping the Future Others Planned for You

Although Titanic is remembered primarily as one of cinema's greatest love stories, Rose's journey is equally about resisting a future that has already been chosen for her. As a young woman from an upper-class family facing financial ruin, she is expected to marry a wealthy man, preserve her family's social status, and fulfill the role of the perfect woman without questioning whether that life reflects her own desires. Every major decision about her future has already been made by those around her.

The film illustrates how women have often been expected to follow a predetermined timeline, one in which marriage and social respectability take precedence over personal ambition or self-discovery. Rose's greatest act of courage is not simply falling in love with Jack, but realizing that she has the right to imagine an entirely different future for herself. By the end of the film, she chooses a life defined by her own dreams rather than by the expectations imposed upon her, reminding us that fulfillment comes from creating our own timeline, not from living according to someone else's.

Lady Bird (2017) and the Pressure to Have Your Life Figured Out

Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird explores a different kind of invisible clock: the pressure young women feel to have their futures planned long before they truly know themselves. Throughout her final year of high school, Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson dreams of leaving Sacramento and building a life beyond the limits she feels have been placed upon her. Yet she is constantly confronted by expectations from her family, her school, and even herself about what her future should look like.

Although she is only seventeen, Lady Bird already feels as though every decision she makes will determine the rest of her life. The film captures an anxiety that many young women experience: the belief that they must choose the right college, the right career, and the right version of themselves before adulthood has even begun. Rather than presenting certainty as the goal, Lady Bird suggests that growth often requires uncertainty. It reminds us that discovering who we are is a process, not a deadline.

When Time Becomes Pressure

The invisible clock extends far beyond marriage and motherhood. It influences careers, appearance, fertility, relationships, and aging. Women are constantly reminded that youth is temporary, beauty fades, fertility declines, and opportunities may disappear if they wait too long. Meanwhile, men are often described as becoming more distinguished, experienced, or successful with age. These contrasting narratives create an environment in which many women begin to experience time not as something to live within, but as something to race against. Every birthday can start to feel like a deadline rather than simply another year of life.

The Difference Between Goals and Deadlines

There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting marriage, children, or a successful career. These aspirations become problematic only when they transform into deadlines rather than genuine desires. Many women find themselves pursuing milestones because they fear running out of time instead of because they are ready for them. A life built around urgency often leaves little room for reflection, exploration, or personal growth. The question should never be whether a woman reaches certain milestones quickly enough, but whether the life she is building genuinely reflects her own values rather than society's expectations.

Learning to Live Without the Clock

Perhaps one of the greatest freedoms a woman can experience is realizing that life is not a race. There is no universal schedule for finding love, building a career, becoming a parent, or discovering who you are. Some women find fulfillment early, while others do so decades later, and neither path is more valid than the other. The invisible clock begins to lose its power the moment women stop asking, "Am I falling behind?" and begin asking a different question instead: "Whose timeline have I been trying to follow all along?"

Contrary to what many people think, choices in color, cut, fabric, and even the way people acquire clothing (department stores, thrift shops, fast fashion) serve as a kind of “social thermometer,” allowing us to assess world conditions and shifts in behavior. For example, in the 1960s and 70s, when young women exuded boldness, blue eyeshadow became a symbol of this new generation. In the 2000s, this makeup element appeared in an extravagant, eye-catching form, but has returned today in a more subdued, understated way, reflecting the minimalism of the current generation.

Fashion has always had to adapt to the social needs of its time, and this was no different during historical events like World War I, when women’s trousers were introduced because women began working in factories in place of men, and traditional corsets fell out of use, no longer suiting the practicality the era demanded. During World War II, fabric rationing occurred worldwide, leading to fewer ruffles and shorter skirts, putting an end to the rigidity of the Edwardian era. In response to these changes, Christian Dior’s 1947 “New Look” collection, despite being called “new”, brought back long skirts and extravagant hats.

Jumping to the 21st century, the 2008 Financial Crisis drove demand for low prices, discreet luxury, practicality, and durability, fueling the rise of fast fashion brands like Zara, H&M, and Forever 21, which focus on high production and low cost, making polyester a viable fabric choice. Small items like lipstick also became hugely popular, as they represented an accessible form of luxury.

This is a clear demonstration of the “lipstick index,” a concept coined by Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estée Lauder, which states that sales of “small luxuries” like lipstick rise during financial crises. This is exactly what’s happening today with the rise of keychain lip gloss and skincare products that are more affordable than larger purchases like travel, yet still bring the consumer pleasure. The famous “soap nails” trend also reflects the need to cut costs on gel manicures or professional nail care, since it’s simple and practical enough to do at home.

In this way, we can see that fashion always adapts to society, becoming as understated as possible in times of crisis. But in a minimalist, discreet era, whether maximalist or not, be yourself.

This isn’t just an Olivia issue, some people, above all women, struggle with this situation. Searching for a healing in a relationship is much more common than it seems, when Olívia sings “I thought I found the antidote this time […] I thought I found the antidote with you” she shows the expectation about healing. She even seems to believe that her partner could become that cure or even help her to heal. There, Olivia puts herself in a position of someone who needs a hero to be saved for her pain and the partner in a position of this savior, whether they want to realize this or not. And this scenario described for Olivia reflects a reality full of wounds that were never properly treated, maybe, those wounds were always treated with another person, we can tell this when she says “Why can’t it never be enough?” and we can see that this relationship isn’t healing her in the refrain. 

In the end of the song, Olivia realizes that he (the partner) would never be the cure for her problems, and this is the most difficult part to understand. Realize that no one is going to save you and you need to do this by yourself and for yourself can be painful like a punch in the stomach, but that’s the first step to heal and understand where this need for a savior comes from. 

Since childhood, many women are taught that romantic love is the most important thing in life, the final goal, this is deployed in society in movies, for example, where the protagonist, that is a girl, has to find a savior, the other half, like they aren’t complete enough without a man, creating a sexist scenario and perception in society.  Also the fact of boys being raised to be independent and achieve their goals, meanwhile girls are often raised to prioritize and pleasing others. Furthermore, the validation that comes from being in a relationship creates an atmosphere of being love for someone that hides all the problems involved in this situation, and when the person realizes this is problematic, that is ingrained in society, the path for the real cure starts, just like in Olivia’s album. 

She is not just narrating the trajectory of her relationship, she is talking about a pattern that has been part of human nature for centuries. 

It lives in the voice that tells a woman she looks better from one angle than another. It appears when she sucks in her stomach for a photo then overthinks how pretty she looks before posting it. It emerges when she feels unattractive without being able to explain why. The audience is no longer in the room. No one has to say anything. The standards have already been internalized.

The male gaze becomes most effective when it stops feeling like men's expectations and starts feeling like our own, even when it might actually not be.

When the Gaze Moves Inside

The common assumption is that women modify themselves because they want approval of those around them, or more specifically, men. But the reality is often more complicated than that. Many women are not consciously asking, Will men like this? In fact, they may genuinely believe they are acting entirely for themselves, without any interest in what the men will say about them.

The issue is that our understanding of what is beautiful, desirable, feminine, successful, or worthy is often shaped long before we begin making those choices. A woman may believe she independently decided what makes someone attractive without realizing that her preferences were formed within a culture that has spent centuries defining women through male-centered expectations, in other words, the male gaze. The gaze becomes invisible because it begins to sound like our own voice.

Dumplin' (2018) and the Beauty Standards We Inherit

In Dumplin', Willowdean Dixon is a plus-sized teenager growing up in a small Texas town where beauty pageants occupy a central place in local culture. As the daughter of a former pageant queen, she constantly finds herself surrounded by messages about what beauty should look like and who deserves to be seen. Throughout the film, she navigates a world that rewards a very specific type of femininity while trying to understand where she fits within it.

What makes the film so compelling is that Willowdean's struggle goes beyond the way other people perceive her body. The deeper conflict is the way she has internalized the belief that some women deserve visibility more than others. The film demonstrates how beauty standards survive, not because someone is constantly enforcing them, but because people absorb them. Eventually, women begin evaluating themselves through those standards automatically. The judgment becomes self-inflicted, even though its origins are social. Willowdean's journey is not simply about gaining confidence; it is about questioning whether the rules she has accepted were ever truly hers to begin with.

Miss Congeniality (2000) and Performing Femininity

In Miss Congeniality, FBI agent Gracie Hart is assigned to go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant after a threat is made against the competition. Practical, outspoken, and largely indifferent to conventional standards of femininity, she suddenly finds herself immersed in a world governed by appearance, poise, charm, and presentation. To blend in, she undergoes an extensive transformation and learns the countless unwritten rules that define how women are expected to look and behave.

While the film is often remembered as a comedy and makeover story, it also reveals how deeply ingrained certain expectations of womanhood have become. The pageant world makes visible something that usually remains hidden, the endless list of standards women are taught to internalize. What is particularly striking is how normal these expectations appear. They are so familiar that they rarely feel imposed. They simply feel like reality.

The Difference Between Choice and Conditioning

This is what makes the internalized male gaze so difficult to recognize. It rarely presents itself as an outside force; instead, it appears as a personal judgment. A woman may think she dislikes her nose, her body, or her aging face because of an independent opinion, leading her to pursue changes in her appearance while strongly believing that this desire to change stems from her own wish to become the “best version of herself.” However, there is a fair chance that her definition of beauty has been shaped by constant exposure to external expectations, and that the version she calls the “best version of herself” may actually be the version that most closely aligns with the standards of the male gaze and its ideas about how a woman should look and behave.

The challenge, then, is not determining whether women should care about their appearance. Rather, it is asking where their standards originated. Are the changes they seek truly expressions of their own values and desires, or are they pursuing ideals inherited from a culture that has long taught women to see themselves through the lens of male approval?

Learning to See Ourselves Clearly

The goal is not to stop caring about appearance. Nor is it to reject beauty, femininity, self-care, or the desire to become the best version of oneself. There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to feel beautiful, confident, healthy, or put together. In fact, taking care of ourselves and feeling comfortable in our own skin can have a profoundly positive impact on our well-being, self-esteem, and quality of life.

The goal is awareness. It is learning to pause and ask where our standards originated. Are we pursuing a change because it genuinely aligns with how we want to express ourselves, or because we have unconsciously absorbed someone else's definition of what a woman should be? The problem is not the desire to improve ourselves; the problem is mistaking inherited expectations for personal desires. True freedom, then, is not abandoning beauty or self-improvement. It is having the ability to choose them consciously. It is being able to look in the mirror and distinguish between the woman you want to become and the woman you were taught to become.

The drive to compare ourselves with others is a natural human instinct. As social beings, we often compare ourselves to evaluate our abilities, understand our social position, and learn from others. In the past, this behavior helped humans survive, but today it has become a psychological trap. Social media allows people to compare their real lives with carefully selected moments from other people's lives. For example, a digital influencer may post videos of herself going to the gym every day at 10 a.m., wearing perfect clothes, with shiny hair, flawless skin, and aesthetic equipment. Meanwhile, one of her followers studies or works for eight hours a day and cannot maintain the same lifestyle. As a result, she may start thinking, “I want to be perfect like her. I want to have the life that she has.” This is where the trap begins. While the creator gains views and profits, the viewer may begin to feel that she is not good enough. 

Over time, this comparison can become a snowball effect and lead to a loss of identity. With the rise of internet aesthetics, many people feel the need to belong to a specific group where everyone dresses the same way, likes the same things, and goes to the same places. This is not healthy because no two people have the same opportunities, experiences, or backgrounds. Trying to fit into a personality box can make people ignore important parts of who they are, including their culture, interests, values, and personal experiences.

The consequences of this problem can be serious, especially for girls and young women. Constant comparison may increase anxiety, insecurity, and the need for validation through likes, views, comments, and compliments. Social media can be a useful tool, but it should not define a person's value. Instead of trying to fit into an unrealistic standard, people should focus on building confidence and accepting their own individuality. After all, a person's worth is not measured by beauty trends or social media approval, but by who they truly are.

Pop culture plays a major role in shaping society’s expectations of women. Through films, celebrities, music, fashion, and social media, women are constantly exposed to messages about how they should look, behave, and present themselves. Although these portrayals are often glamorized as empowering or aspirational, they frequently promote unrealistic standards that pressure women to prioritize perfection over authenticity. As a result, female individuality and self-expression can become limited by the need to fit into socially accepted ideals of femininity.

This pressure is clearly explored in The Devil Wears Prada. At the beginning of the film, Andy is comfortable with her natural personality, appearance, and lifestyle. However, after entering the fashion industry, she quickly realizes that success and acceptance depend on fitting a very specific image of womanhood. She changes the way she dresses, behaves, and prioritizes her life in order to meet the expectations surrounding her. The film demonstrates how pop culture industries, especially fashion and media, often pressure women to transform themselves into more polished and “perfect” versions in order to be taken seriously or valued. Andy’s transformation also reveals how individuality can become suppressed under these standards. Although she gains recognition and external success, she slowly loses touch with her original identity and relationships. Her experience reflects how many women feel pressured to change aspects of themselves to fit beauty standards, social expectations, or professional ideals promoted by pop culture.

This same pressure can also be seen in the experiences of celebrities such as Britney Spears. Throughout her career, Britney Spears was constantly placed under intense public scrutiny regarding her appearance, behavior, relationships, and personal choices. The media often expected her to embody contradictory ideals: she was expected to be attractive but innocent, confident but controlled, glamorous but relatable. Every aspect of her identity was analyzed and criticized whenever she failed to meet society’s expectations of the “perfect” female celebrity. Britney Spears’ experience demonstrates how pop culture can limit female individuality by turning women into carefully controlled images rather than allowing them to exist as complex human beings. The pressure to constantly maintain perfection can become emotionally damaging, especially when women are criticized both for conforming to and deviating from societal standards. Her story reveals how women in the public eye are often denied the freedom to fully express themselves without judgment.

Both The Devil Wears Prada and Britney Spears’ experience show how pop culture reinforces unrealistic ideals of womanhood. Women are encouraged to become versions of themselves that are socially desirable rather than fully authentic. Whether through fashion, beauty standards, media expectations, or celebrity culture, the “perfect woman” ideal often pressures women to suppress parts of their individuality in order to gain acceptance. Ultimately, pop culture has the power not only to reflect societal expectations but also to shape them. When women are constantly shown narrow definitions of beauty, success, and femininity, self-expression becomes restricted by fear of judgment and pressure to conform. True empowerment comes not from achieving perfection, but from allowing women the freedom to embrace their individuality without feeling obligated to fit an impossible ideal.

Jo March: Independence and Revolution

The second oldest sister, Josephine March, brings to light a contradictory aspect of the time in which the story takes place. Many see Jo only as the rebellious and anti-romantic sister. Conversely, Josephine fights for her essence and her place in the world at a time when women had only one function: to take care of the home. Therefore, Jo is an example of resistance for all those who did not give up their freedom. Even though, nowadays, this is theoretically easier, there is still much to be achieved for women.

Amy March: Maturation and Passion

The youngest of the March sisters evolves from an immature young woman into a balanced woman. However, this balance doesn't negate her ambition: for Amy, it's all or nothing when it comes to becoming a great artist. Although this stance may seem extreme, there's much to admire about her. Amy understands the reality she lives in, but that doesn't stop her from pursuing her profession. Furthermore, she uses her courage, charm, and intelligence to secure her future.

Beth March: Kindness and Inner strength

One of the most different and sometimes even forgotten sisters, Beth has always dedicated herself to her family, prioritizing the well-being of those around her. Her more introverted personality reveals great inner strength, as well as modesty and harmony, characteristics that are also reflected in her musical talent.

Meg March: Responsibility and dedication

Margaret March, being the eldest, inevitably assumes an almost maternal role in relation to her sisters. Alongside her mother, she takes care of the house and seeks to help everyone around her,which, in certain aspects, brings her closer to Beth. Unlike Jo, Meg aspires to a more traditional and simple life, even though she sometimes desires luxuries she cannot immediately afford. Thus, she presents herself as an example of female resilience, demonstrating maturity in the face of limitations and valuing character above appearances.

In this way, Little Women shows us that not all women share the same dreams, but all of us have dreams of our own, and they cannot, and should not, be silenced by anything or anyone. Do not diminish yourself to fit into a mold; never forget your desires and talents. Persist, even when the path is difficult, like Jo’s; a long process, like Amy’s; more internal and silent, like Beth’s; or in the pursuit of simple happiness, like Meg’s. Never forget Josephine’s words, which resonate throughout the story: “Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for.“

In a world that still encourages girls to dilute their ambition to seem more “likable,” Blair’s mindset feels almost rebellious. She didn’t pretend she didn’t want power or success. She was clear about her desires, and that clarity is what made her powerful, even when she was judged for acting that way. Her character pushes us to question why ambition is often celebrated in others, but looked down so quickly when it shows up in women.

Owning Your Ambition, Fully

Blair never treated her dreams like something to hide or downplay. She spoke about what she wanted with certainty, not hesitation or fear of what others might think or say. That kind of clarity is rare, especially for girls who are often taught to soften their goals to avoid seeming intimidating or “too much.”

Ambition without apology means allowing yourself to fully acknowledge your desires, speak up about them and treat them with the importance and dignity they deserve. It means saying, without shrinking, that you want more for your life, and then going after it. There is strength in being direct with yourself and others. Wanting something deeply is not a flaw; it’s a sign of direction and purpose.

Confidence Isn’t Always Gentle, and That’s Okay

Blair’s confidence didn’t always come across as soft or traditionally “nice.” She was assertive, competitive, and sometimes intimidating. While her actions weren’t always admirable, her presence challenges the idea that confidence must always be gentle to be acceptable.

The truth is that girls spend their whole lives being told that they shouldn’t be too ambitious, and even if they do develop some confidence or goals of their own, they are told that they shouldn’t be loud, or make a big deal about it so they don’t “cross boundaries” and “take too much space”. Unfortunately, it’s noticeable that others don’t need to worry as much about their confidence overpowering others’, while women have to make it a priority to police themselves to shrink their confidence. But real confidence includes the ability to take up space without apology. You are allowed to be strong in a way that feels natural to you, even if it doesn’t fit a narrow definition of “pleasant.”

The Line Between Confidence and Control

At the same time, Blair’s story shows that ambition can become unhealthy when it is driven by fear. Her need to control situations and always come out on top often came from insecurity rather than self-assurance. When confidence is tied too closely to external validation, it can become exhausting and isolating.

That’s where balance becomes essential. True ambition is not about constantly proving your worth or winning at all costs. It is about striving for your goals while still maintaining a sense of self that isn’t dependent on outcomes. Confidence should support you, not trap you in a cycle of pressure and comparison.

Redefining What It Means to “Have It All”

Blair refused to believe she had to choose between success, love, and personal fulfillment. She wanted everything, and she pursued it without hesitation. That mindset challenges a common narrative that girls must limit themselves or prioritize one part of their lives over another. How many times have women been judged for still working after becoming mothers or criticized for choosing a career over having a family?

Blair proves how we are allowed to want a full and meaningful life. Women shouldn’t have to choose between their desires while others are allowed to pursue all aspects of their goals. With that, it’s important to know that you don’t have to reduce your dreams to fit into someone else’s expectations. Ambition doesn’t have to come at the cost of other parts of who you are, it can exist alongside them.

Building Your Own Blueprint

The goal isn’t to become Blair Waldorf, but to learn from her. Her clarity, discipline, and belief in her own potential are qualities worth keeping. At the same time, her struggles remind us to let go of fear-driven competition and the need for constant control.

Mean Girls isn’t just a high school comedy, it’s a reflection of how this system operates. Regina George, for instance, doesn't just compete with other girls; she maintains her personal power by also competing against her own friends. She makes sure that from the given standards: Beauty, popularity, desirability… She stands out from all the others. Consequently, society rewards her as the “Queen Bee” of the school, the best one out of the other girls.

However, calling her a villain for this competition couldn’t be further from fair. Regina and all the other girls were conditioned to feel like they could only thrive in high school if they stood out and put down any other woman who threatened their chance to be in the spolight.

That is when the world becomes a battlefield for women, a battlefield designed to shrink women's potential by only letting one remain standing.

Little Women: Choosing Connection Anyway

The world was and is a place that limits women’s roles and measures their worth, but differently from Regina, the March sisters choose not to turn against each other, however tempting society made it for them.

In Little Woman, Amy is praised for her beauty and artistic refinement. Jo is recognized for her intellect and ambition, but those traits are not always valued in women the same way. Meg represents traditional femininity, which is rewarded socially. Beth embodies quiet kindness, which is loved but not “competitive” in the same visible way.That ranking could have created insecurity. Amy could resent Jo’s freedom. Jo could dismiss Amy’s strengths. Meg could feel inadequate next to both. Each of them has something the others don’t and in a competitive system, differences often turn into threats instead of strengths.

What makes the March sisters powerful isn’t that they’re immune to these pressures, it’s that they’re aware of them, even if not explicitly. They feel jealousy. They argue. They misunderstand each other. But they don’t let competition define their relationship. They return to empathy, understanding, and love.

They choose to see each other as individuals, not as threats.

Why Unity Feels Threatening to the World

Right now, a lot of women’s energy goes into comparison. If that energy shifted into collaboration, the impact would grow fast. More shared opportunities, more mentorship, more women opening doors for each other instead of feeling like they have to guard them.

When competition fades, so does the constant need for approval. Instead of asking, “Am I better than her?” the question becomes, “Do I like who I am?” That’s a completely different mindset.

Through Tiana, the film presents a protagonist who does everything “right”. She works relentlessly, sacrifices joy, and follows the rules, yet still finds herself locked out of the future she deserves. This article doesn’t belittle hard work, for it is crucial to achieve one’s goals, however, working tirelessly can never be the only method to get there, and we see this through Tiana’s story.

The film quietly exposes a truth many stories avoid: discipline alone cannot overcome structural barriers.

Tiana Does Everything She’s Told to Do

From the beginning, Tiana embodies the ideal worker. She holds multiple jobs, saves every dollar, and refuses distractions. Her dream of opening a restaurant is practical, not fantastical. Unlike other Disney heroines, she does not wait for magic. She mirrors what most of us from the real world seek, financial freedom and a dream of her own, in this case, to open a restaurant.

Yet despite her discipline, she is constantly behind. She works harder than everyone around her and still lacks what others take for granted: access. Her wealthy friend Charlotte can buy her dreams with ease, while Tiana must calculate every cent. 

Tiana is not failing. The system is failing her. But if we understand the system, we can learn how to navigate though it with excellence.

However, progress never comes. Her bill is delayed, softened, and quietly sidelined. Lawmakers praise her ideas but refuse to act on them. Even her allies back away when supporting her becomes politically inconvenient, or go against the majority. The system is not broken, it is functioning exactly as designed. It absorbs criticism without changing, using politeness and delay as tools of control.

This is the first reality check of the film: being heard is not the same as being taken seriously, because sometimes people hear you just so that you will eventually stop talking. But you don’t have to give in to this system, instead, fight it.
